Inauguration of the Armed Forces Tribunal, Regional Bench, Guwahati

The Armed Forces Tribunal constituted under the Armed Forces Tribunal Act 2007 for the adjudication of complaints and disputes regarding service matters and appeals arising out of the verdicts of the Courts – Martial of the members of the three services (Army, Navy & Airforce) to provide for quick and less expensive justice to the members of the said Armed Forces of the Union. It has been decided that a total of 15 benches will be created across India, of these three each shall be located in Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow and one each in Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kochi, Jaipur and Chennai. Delhi will be the Principal Bench and will have three courts and jurisdiction over the state of Delhi. The Chandigarh Bench will have jurisdiction over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh (UT), Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The Lucknow Bench will have jurisdiction over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The Guwahati Bench will have jurisdiction over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The Mumbai Bench will have jurisdiction over Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, while Kochi Bench will have jurisdiction over Kerala, Karnataka and Laksha Dweep islands. Chennai Bench will look after Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh. The Jaipur Bench will have jurisdiction over Rajasthan and Kolkata Bench will have jurisdiction over West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and Andaman & Nichobar islands.

As per the Gazette of India Notification dated 28th July 2010, the Armed Forces Tribunal, Regional Bench, Guwahati was inaugurated on 31st July 2010 by Hon’ble Mr. Justice AK Mathur, Former Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and presently Chairperson, Armed Forces Tribunal, New Delhi in the presence and blessings of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Madan B Lokur, the then Chief Justice of the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court, Guwahati as Chief Guest and other distinguished guests including Hon’ble Judges of the Gauhati High Court and several high level dignitaries of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army, State & Central Govts. During the prestigious inaugural function, Hon’ble Mr. Justice CY Somayajulu, former Judge of the Hon’ble High Court of Andra Pradesh and the then Member (Judicial), Armed Forces Tribunal (Regional Bench) Guwahati presented the welcome speech and Hon’ble Cmde Mohan Phadke (Retd), Member (Admin), Armed Forces Tribunal (Regional Bench) Guwahati had presented vote of thanks.The meeting was anchored by SM Haque, Registrar, Armed Forces Tribunal (Regional Bench) Guwahati.

SHIFTING OF ARMED FORCES TRIBUNAL (REGIONAL BENCH), GUWAHATI

The Regional Bench of Armed Forces Tribunal, Guwahati was established in the month of September, 2009 and its office started functioning at the 7th and 8th Floors of the G.L. Publication Building, Ulubari, Guwahati since then, but it was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr Justice AK Mathur, Former Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the then Chairperson, Armed Forces Tribunal on 31st July 2010 in presence of Hon’ble Mr Justice Madan B Lokur, the then Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Guwahati as Guest of Honour and various dignitaries including its first two Hon’ble Members, i.e., Hon’ble Mr Justice CY Somayajulu, former Judge of the Hon’ble High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Member (Judicial) and Hon’ble Cmde Mohan Phadke (Retd), Member (Admin). From the inception till date thousands of cases relating to service matters and appeal rising out of verdict of the Court Martial of the three Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force) have been disposed of by the AFT (RB), Guwahati.

The Office accommodation of the Armed Forces Tribunal has been shifted from its earlier location of 7th and 8th Floor of G.L. Publications Building, Ulubari, Guwahati – 7 to a new accommodation situated at the 2nd Floor of the Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd., Rehabari, Guwahati (Behind the Assam Police Headquarters, B.K. Kakati Road, Rehabari, Guwahati – 8) and it has commenced its office functioning with effect from 01st May 2018. However, the new office accommodation of the Armed Forces Tribunal (Regional Bench), Guwhati at the 2nd Floor of the Assam Police Housing Corporation Ltd., Rehabari, Guwahati – 8, has been officially inaugurated by his Lordship Hon’ble Mr. Justice Virender Singh, (Former Hon’ble Chief Justice, Jharkhand High Court) presently Chairperson, Armed Forces Tribunal (Principal Bench), New Delhi on 07th May 2018 at 10.00 A.M. in presence of other distinguished personalities from Judiciary, Assam Police and the Armed Forces.
